Google has restructured its responsible AI teams to be led under VP of Engineering, Marian Croak, in an attempt to stabilize its AI ethics research. Marian Croak will report directly to Jeff Dean, SVP of Google AI. This restructuring comes after the uncomfortable departure of Timnit Gebru, which caused a rift in the AI Ethics team. Marian Croak has multiple decades of research experience, working on groundbreaking technologies with 200+ patents in areas such as Voice over IP. Instacart Appoints Former Facebook VP Asha Sharma as COO

Instacart, a San Francisco-based grocery delivery company, has hired Asha Sharma as their new COO. In her role, Sharma will oversee the Instacart app, marketplace, logistics, and marketing, with a focus on retaining regular customers and engaging new ones. Previously, Asha Sharma worked at Facebook as VP of Product and Engineering, COO at Porch Group, a software solutions company, and at Microsoft in Marketing and Operations. She begins in mid-February and will report directly to CEO Apoorva Mehta. Instacart is a unicorn startup with $2.4 billion in total funding and an overall valuation of $17.7 billion. [Read More

California-based biotech automation company, Artificial. Inc., has promoted Nikhita Singh as their Chief Product Officer. Nikhita Singh is a founding member of Artificial, joining in 2018. She has 10+ years of experience in product strategy and technology, working as a Human-Robot Interaction Researcher at MIT Media Lab, Cloud Robotics and New Media Researcher at Berkeley, and Commercial BD at Palantir. Persona-based artificial intelligence startup Deep Labs has appointed Reginald Van Lee as the Chairman of their Board of Directors, where he will be guiding the company’s continued development in the AI market, and aid in its scaling and trajectory. Reginald Van Lee is currently the Chief Transformation Officer at The Carlyle Group, and prior to this, he was Head of Commercial Business and Executive Vice President of Booz Allen Hamilton. Toyota Research Institute Enters Next Five-Year Phase of Collaborative Research With 16 Academic Institutions

The Toyota Research Institute has selected a total of 16 academic institutions to take part in its five-year collaborative research program focused on AI, robotics, and Machine Assisted Cognition (MAC). These institutions include Carnegie Mellon University, Princeton, MIT, and UCLA. During this phase, Toyota Research Institute will invest over $75 million in these academic institutions, making it one of the largest collaborative research programs spearheaded by a vehicle company. In its previous five-year phase, Toyota sponsored 98 projects involving over 200 students and around 100 faculty members. [Read More]

Among the winning recipients is Jeffery Dean, senior fellow and SVP for Google AI, who has been awarded the John von Neumann Medal for his contributions to science and the engineering of large-scale distributed computer systems and AI systems.
