Zoubin Ghahramani, previous Uber Chief Scientist and VP for AI, announced that he has joined the Google Brain leadership team in a tweet on September 12. Zoubin Ghahramani is a significant figure in machine learning; he was a founding member of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and AI. He is also a professor of Information Engineering at the University of Cambridge, with 250+ published research papers. Ghahramani became a member of Uber when Geometric Intelligence, an AI research startup he co-founded, was acquired by Uber as a foundation to create their own AI lab. [Read More]
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has promoted executives Teresa Carlson and Greg Pearson. These promotions are to fill the departure of the previous VP of Worldwide Field Operations, Mike Clayville, who left in August to join Stripe as CRO. Teresa Carlson will now be in charge of the worldwide public sector along with overseas sales to the healthcare and financial industries. Previously, she was the VP of Federal Sales and Operations at Microsoft. Greg Pearson will now be leading worldwide sales. He was previously the Senior VP and Global Policy Officer at Intel. Seattle-based data storage platform, Qumulo, has appointed Elissa Fink to its Board of Directors. This follows Qumulo’s recent securing of $125 million in Series E funding, giving it a unicorn status with a valuation of $1.2 billion, led by BlackRock. Prior to this, she was the CMO for data visualization company Tableau. With an extensive background in marketing and scaling tech companies, Elissa Fink can help grow Qumulo on a global level. California-based AI solutions provider, Riiid Labs, has appointed Jim Larimore as Chief Officer for Equity in Learning. Within his role, he will be leading initiatives to build global partnerships in equity and student success via AI education solutions. Previously, Jim Larimore was the Dean of Students at Amherst College, and Deputy Director of PostSecondary Success at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. [Read More]
Oxford University has created an academic team dedicated to exploring ethics in AI. A team of seven philosophers has been appointed to this project, with Professor John Tasioulas, Director of the Yeoh Tiong Lay Centre for Politics, Philosophy, and Law, leading as the inaugural Director of the institute in October. In a Q&A, Tasioulas explained that his aim is to “bring the highest standards of academic rigor to the discussion of AI ethics”, noting that the debates on AI regulations are “enhanced by the arguments and insights of experts working on questions of AI ethics”.
