John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo, to be Replaced by Tekedra Mawakana and Dmitri Dolgov, Previous COO and CTO

John Krafcik, CEO at Waymo, Google’s autonomous driving project, has announced he will be stepping down. He will be replaced by both Dmitri Dolgov and Tekedra Mawakana, who will serve as Co-CEOs.  Dolgov was CTO at Waymo and previously was a Distinguished Software Engineer at Google, and Mawakana was COO and is currently on the Board of Directors at Intuit. While Krafcik is leaving his role as CEO, he will continue as an advisor to Waymo. Before working at Waymo, Krafcik was the President at TrueCar, an auto trading and selling platform. [Read More]

Samy Bengio, Google AI Research Manager, Resigns amid Issues with Ethics Team

Samy Bengio, Research Scientist and Manager for Google AI, has resigned; this comes just months after AI-ethics co-leads Timnit Gebru and Margaret Mitchell also left the company. Both Gebru and Mitchell reported to Bengio as he was a prominent manager at Google Brain, the corporation’s deep-learning and AI team. This also comes after a reshuffle of the research unit, which diminished Bengio’s responsibilities. Sarah Tariq, Former Sr. Director of Perception at Zoox, Joins NVIDIA as VP of Autonomous Driving Software

Sarah Tariq has been hired by NVIDIA as their VP of Autonomous Driving Software. This is not the first time Tariq has worked there, she had previously been an NVIDIA employee for nine years, where she was most recently the Senior Software Engineer for Computer Vision. However, she left NVIDIA to join self-driving startup Zoox, where she stayed for five years, with her last role being Senior Director of Perception. [Read More]

Splunk, Operational Intelligence Software Company, Hires Teresa Carlson, Former AWS VP, as President and Chief Growth Officer

Splunk, a San Francisco-based operational intelligence software company, has announced Teresa Carlson as their President and Chief Growth Officer. In this role, Carlson will be leading Splunk’s sales, customer success, as well as work with marketing leaders. She has 25+ years of experience in the industry, previously working as VP of Worldwide Public Sector and Industries for Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as VP of Federal Sales and Operations at Microsoft. LivePerson, Customer Engagement Company, Hires Monica Pool Knox as Chief People Officer, and Amber Armstrong as CMO

LivePerson, a New York-based real-time customer engagement and intelligence company, has announced two executive hires: Monica Pool Knox has been appointed as SVP and Chief People Officer, and Amber Armstrong has been appointed as SVP and CMO. Prior to this, Knox was a Global Head of Human Resources for Mixed Reality at Microsoft, and Head of Human Resources at Twitter. Armstrong was previously VP and CMO of AI Applications and Blockchain at IBM, and began at IBM as an MBA Marketing Intern. In their roles, Knox will be overseeing LivePerson’s global HR strategy, and Amber Armstrong will lead their global marketing strategy. [Read More]

AI Experts Yll Bajraktari, Martial Hebert, and Megan McConnell, Debate The Need for AI Talent in The US Government

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, three AI experts discuss the necessity for AI talent in government, and how that talent can be acquired. Among those sharing insights was Yll Bajraktari, Executive Director of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, Martial Hebert, Dean of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science, and Megan McConnell, a Partner at McKinsey & Co. Within the discussion it was established: 1) while the US Government has experienced AI talent working with it they are usually contractors rather than people in-house; 2) young talent is generally excited about working to solve important AI solutions, and 3) talent is often dissuaded by working with Government because of how long it usually takes to gain clearance (12-18 months).
